Sembawang Shipyard Launches "Green Wave" Environmental Care Project for Schools
Do you have what it takes to save the earth? This is the theme of the new "Green Wave" Environmental Care Project launched by Sembawang Shipyard (SS) to involve the community, especially youths, in the quest for environmental conservation and improvement. The launch of "Green Wave" is in conjunction with the yard's achievement of ISO 14001 Environmental System Award in 2002. SS is the first shipyard in South East Asia to achieve this award from Det Norske Veritas.
This project is organised in the form of a competition and is targeted at students. The competition is open to students of all school levels. i.e. from primary to junior colleges, and includes those in the Institute of Technical Education and tertiary institutions. The objective is to inculcate in the students a sense of personal and group responsibility for their environment, and in the process, develop creative and innovative ideas in the areas of environmental care and protection that will contribute towards conservation and improvement of our environment. Students may participate either individually or in teams, and will have six months (from February to August 2003) to work on their projects.
Entries will be evaluated by a panel of judges based on several key factors such as originality and innovation, relevance, impact/sustainability, project product, ability to achieve its goals and positive environmental impact on the community. Cash awards range from the top prize of $4,000 for primary schools to $ 10,000 for tertiary institutions. The competition will be offered to the schools on a yearly basis commencing from 2003.
