This course is one of six comprehensive part-time diploma programmes aimed at professional upgrading of adults who possess relevant work experience in various fields of engineering. The others are in Building Services, Electronic, Electrical, Mechanical and Mechatronics. Special features of these courses are their modular credit system, self-paced learning format, shorter duration of study, flexibility in choices of modules and wider range of multi-disciplinary electives. The courses are supported by the Skills Development Fund and Skills Redevelopment Programmes.

Core modules in the Marine & Offshore programme include technical mathematics, applied mechanics, engineering materials & processes, principles of DC & AC circuits, ship design, naval architecture. marine and offshore engineering, strength of material and fundamentals of thermofluid. Each module is 60 hours and carries four credit units. A student who obtains a minimum of 80 credit units will be awarded the Diploma in Technology (Marine & Offshore).

To encourage continuous learning and upgrading of working adults, the entry requirements have also been made more flexible. The Diploma in Technology course recognises relevant working experience as an important entry criteria. It provides opportunity for those who were unable to attain a diploma education previously, as they do not possess the requisite GCE 'O' level entry requirements in English, Mathematics and the relevant Science, to pursue a diploma qualification. The minimum entry requirements for the part-time diploma programmes are:

Either one of the following qualifications and 3 years of relevant working experience

  • Any 3 GCE'O' level passes (except ECA) and a pass in entrance tests in the requisite subjects in English, Mathematics & Science (Physics), or
  • GCE 'O' level passes in English, Mathematics & Science, or
  • GCE 'A' level passes in English, any Mathematics subject and Physics, Physical Science or Engineering Science, or
  • ITC/Higher Nitec certificate and 2 years of relevant working experience in the same area/field of studies as the ITE certification.

The Diploma in Technology is recognised by the Ministry of Education. The Ministry of Manpower has confirmed that graduates of the Diploma in Technology (Marine & Offshore) will be assessed for employment pass applications on the same basis as all other polytechnic diploma graduates. Graduates in this programme will be eligible for entry into the Advanced Diploma in Marine & Offshore Technology jointly conducted by NP and the University of Strathclyde.
